Editing & Proofreading

Editing adds clarity and consistency to a document, ensuring that readers stay focused on your message. I offer line and copy editing, and often do both together.

Line editing focuses on improving sentence structure, style, and flow.

Copy editing looks for and corrects errors in spelling, grammar, word choice, and consistency. Importantly, copy editing ensures that a document conforms to a style guide.

I work with documents such as:

  • journal article submissions

  • grant proposals
  • reports
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • curricular materials
  • social media posts

Proofreading and formatting ensure a clean, professional appearance and align your document with funder, agency, or in-house requirements. These tasks can also be done together.

Proofreading is a mechanical edit that checks for typographical, grammatical, and formatting errors.

Formatting adjusts things like margins, line spacing, font, and references/citations to make sure a document's presentation is internally consistent and meets funder or publisher requirements.

Rates start at $55/hour. See the EFA's rate chart for a guide to typical rates for editorial work.

Indexing

A well-crafted index adds value to your book, manual, or other document by creating a map of the information inside so readers can find exactly what they're looking for.

Indexing involves creating an alphabetical list of topics in a book or other document, along with page numbers or other locators indicating each topic's location in the document.

I can index a variety of subject areas but have special interest in science and technical topics, environment and sustainability, cooking and food, and health and fitness.

With this service you will receive a professional, high-quality back-of-book index as a Word document, PDF, or RTF file. I also have experience with embedded indexing.

Can authors index their own work? Absolutely! But a professional indexer can provide expertise and peace of mind. Contact me to learn more and get started.

Rates start at $4/indexable page. See the EFA's rate chart for a guide to typical rates for editorial work.
